What kind of rod and reel should I use for Halibut fishing?

Halibut and other deep sea bottom-fish are usually found in depths greater than 100’, and when reeling up a large fish like that, a short and stout rod under 6’ is ideal. Pair it with a heavy duty reel that can hold enough braided line to get you down to the zone.

What kind of line should I use for Halibut fishing?

We recommend a braided line like P-Line EndurX (our braided option on all of our reels), P-Line X-Braid or Power Pro Braided Spectra. 65 to 80 pound test is most popular.

How heavy should my sinkers be for Halibut fishing?

Depending on the current and depth, most anglers use between 12 ounces and 3 pounds. In protected coastal areas, around 1 pound can be ideal. Out in open ocean areas with current, 2 to 3 pounds it more typical.
